ENERFAB PROCESS SYSTEMS GROUP:
FIELD ERECTION OF LARGE FERMENTERS FOR DOW CHEMICAL
ENERFAB has again proven their experience in the
design, shop
fabrication, and field erection of large fermenters for
pharmaceutical and chemical processing facilities. This time
the project involved several large half-pipe jacketed,
stainless steel vessels for Dow Chemical, Harbor Beach, MI.
Design improvements for the field constructed ASME pressure
vessels, equipped to handle a state-of-the-art agitator, not
only ensured efficient construction techniques but also
operation reliability.
Prefabrication and testing of the large shell and head
sections, internal coils and exterior half-pipe jackets, under
ideal shop conditions, considerably reduced the time required
to erect the tanks in the field. This allowed for a flexible
erection sequence which resulted in completion of the first
fermenter, including piping, on schedule. Using larger
fermenters reduces the cost/gallon of capital expense, and
also provides operational advantages when compared to using
smaller shop-built fermenters.
